Crap that happened in trades

• It would seem Ricard likes his own traditions this time of year: Bathurst and Italians. M-O Brouillard was sent to the Titan for Giovanni Fiore (which means Johnny Flower, by the way), a first rounder in 2014, and a third rounder this year that previously belonged to Val-d'Or. The move means the end of the Tomas Torok experiment (7 points in 18 games).
• Then they got Miguel Caron from Team I Do Not Want To Discuss Right Now Due To Recent Events for a fourth-rounder in 2014.
• Gabriel Labbé was sent to (guess who?) Bathurst in return for Étienne Salvail, straight up. Not stirred or shaken.
• And today, the Volts tried to give Alexandre Grenier to the Phoenix for a tenth rounder, but the papers were filed too late so they get to claim him off waivers instead. Noooooooooo!
• Also leaving (well, sent down for now) is Érik Longtin.

Around the league:

• Rimouski and Rouyn swapped goaltenders, as Carl Hozjan and Robin Gusse head to opposite sides of the province.
• T.I.D.N.W.T.D.R.N.D.T.R.E also won the Jérémy Grégoire sweepstakes, also picking up netminder Francis Desrosiers in return for their next two first rounders, Thomas Gobeil and Loïk Leveillé.
• Well well well, Moncton gets Phillip Danault. The return? Gabriel Gagné, first round selections in 2014 and 2015, a 2015 2nd-rounder as well as a first round selection in the 2014 Euro Draft. Somewhere in there is Alex (Alex? Who's Alex?) Ivan Barbashev which is drawing criticism (if not profanity).

Alum-flash: In news that makes me less grumpy, apparently Max Villemaire has returned to the Sea Dogs from the Gwinett Gladiators of the ECHL. Over/under on how many penalty minutes that game will have, and what percentage are his? :D

Status quo.

Whoa! Slightly disconcerting alum-news to start the post:

Canadian Derick Brassard today, Tuesday, left Salzburg for Canada. His departure has baffled EC Red Bull Salzburg, given that the 25-year-old forward personally confirmed his intention to stay with the Red Bulls only last Wednesday and had also been notified of the deadline for finalising the squad for the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (last Saturday). In the knowledge that his departure from the club after just one game – last Sunday against Linz – has necessitated the first of three possible exchanges, Derick Brassard has turned his back on the club today, despite contractual obligations and reassurances to the contrary. After the player, who is contracted to the Columbus Blue Jackets, cleared his things from the dressing room on Monday morning without warning, the Red Bulls tried in vain to contact him by telephone. The powers that be at the Salzburg club then contacted Derick Brassard personally to let him know that they were unwilling to let the Canadian go. He was told not to do anything hasty that he might later regret, and he was reminded in no uncertain terms of the contractual situation. Unfortunately, Derick Brassard still flew out of Salzburg this morning. The Red Bulls will be notifying the IIHF of the player's breach of contract and will be seeking legal advice. (redbull.com)

Anyway. Flipping that alum-bit for a happier one:

Howes bagged two goals in a 4-3 shootout win at Arizona. Both came on the power play. He leads the circuit in goals with 15-10-25 totals in just 16 [now 17] games, and he also leads with eight power-play goals. Tonight's outburst was his fourth multi-goal game and his eighth multi-point night this season. Also, check this out about the guy who was the Kelly Cup MVP for the Aces in 2011 -- his shooting percentage is a ridiculous 25.9 percent. That's 15 goals on just 58 shots. (adn.com)

In regular news, since I've been asleep on the button lately...

For the gazillionth time: "[Dominic Ricard] is even juggling with the idea of the status quo [for the QMJHL trade period]."

Hahahaha. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Ha. Haaaaa.

I went into calculation mode last week and came up with the real deal: On average, he has made seven trades per trade period (Christmastime trade period, that is). The one with the least amount of trades (incidentally, also a "status quo" year) was four, and that was the year Drummondville popped up to win the Jake Allen sweepstakes. (The year with the most trades was, unsurprisingly, the revolving door known as 2007-2008. This is just in the Ricard regime, by the way.)

And for the gazillionth time...: Status quo is immediately revoked. Au revoir, Bryce Milson. The 19 year old was traded to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in return for a third round pick in 2013. He who started the year as team fitness champion with an excellent preseason has not been able to continue on that pace in the same way (it has to be said he wasn't exactly used consistently, either).

Meanwhile, Duhamel left for Team Canada: And Louis Robitaille picked up his first win as head coach against the Quebec Remparts in a shootout. How about that? Boom.

For lack of a better blog post title, onwards with the bullet points!

• First preseason outing: great! Fantastic, even. 5-1 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix. M-O Brouillard picked up four points (two of each) and Mr. Fitness (that might stick, forgive me) regularly known as Bryce Milson recorded two goals and an assist. Alexandre Grenier scored the other goal.
• Second preseason outing: the opposite of fantastic. The Phoenix get their revenge, 4-1. The lone goal for Drummondville came from Jérôme Verrier.
• One of the assists from that lone goal: Raman/Roman Hrabarenka/Graborenko. Apparently he has since moved onto better projects. Formerly the defensive cornerstone of the team, and formerly a Tampa Bay training camp attendee, he received an offer from the New Jersey Devils that could allow him to graduate to the pro level sooner than expected. 
• Because of this, the Volts acquired Chicoutimi captain Gabriel Vermette, seeming to finalize both Drummondville and Chicoutimi's overager situations. (Return: a 2014 third rounder.) With the end of trade period tomorrow, Dominic Ricard decided it was better to act fast.
• Philippe Venne was traded for Ryan Labrie, a 19 year old (now former) #theshawi player that has played very little hockey for his age. Jury's out on this one (but at least there's also an eighth-round pick in this deal just in case). He did score twice in the first five games the Cataractes granted him, however. Venne's dad also played for #theshawi back in his day, so clearly no hard feelings there. To mark his "homecoming," the younger Venne even scored two goals and added an assist in his third straight game against the Phoenix, a game that #theshawi won handily by the score of 4-0.
• Another cut to announce: Chad Millett, an 18 year old free agent from Ontario. The rest of the cuts will be named tomorrow.
  
  

Around the league: The Saint John Sea Dogs have only existed for a handful of years yet already have a third jersey, and one that somewhat scares me:

It seems to have turned more shark than dog?

Alumni watch: This weekend, Gabriel Dumont, Frédéric St-Denis and Derick Brassard participated in a three-day Boot Camp benefiting the Quebec Cancer Foundation. No word on who actually won (the semifinals AND final were all held today), but the four squad lists composed completely of hopefully-not-soon-to-be-locked-out-NHLers, for anyone interested, are here.

So I've missed a lot of things.

First things first, I don't know if you know this, but the Shawinigan Cataractes are this year's Memorial Cup champions.

Good. Just getting that out of the way, it was an extremely pressing subject.

Second, the Sherbrooke Phoenix are the new kids on the block and this week they had their expansion draft. They selected Drummondville's Dominic Talbot-Tassi and Vincent Blanchette, as well as former Voltigeur Alexandre Comtois.

The QMJHL draft was also held this weekend. Without a selection to make until the second round, Joey Ratelle and Jérémy Auger were the first new Drummondville players of the day. Then after waiting three more rounds to speak again, defenseman Mathieu Amyot was selected. Winger Dylan Montcalm, 6'4" defenseman Alex Bilodeau (!), Louis-Philippe Guindon, Xavier Labonté, Gabriel Labbé, Sacha Harmois, Mark Dufour, and Bobby Hall were the Voltigeurs' other selections yesterday.

A few trades were also finalized: Toliver Bergeron of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada was swapped to Drummondville for a ninth round pick next year, Jérôme Raymond went to Bathurst in exchange for 20 year old Jordan Murray, Jérémie Malouin made his way over from Quebec in exchange for two 2012 draft picks (rounds 2 and 4), and the additional pick sent to the Volts in that deal eventually became Joey Ratelle. Finally, Jonathan Oligny became a Cape Breton Screaming Eagle for a 2013 third rounder.

Other things that happened (or didn't):  André Bouvet-Morrissette had an invite to the Canadiens' combine, but eventually signed a contract with the Nashville organization.

Charles Landry was part of the Kelly Cup winning Florida Everblades team....

...and yesterday Ondrej Palat won the Calder Cup with the Norfolk Admirals. (With Landry technically as part of the roster. Double-champion!)

In the classroom, Ryan McKiernan, Jonathan Brunelle, and even Antoine Tardif were all recognized at the Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit last week. McKiernan in particular got 6 A's for his 3.65 GPA ...and suddenly I feel ten times more awful as a student than I ever did.
